Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre, Pahang
Finally got to visit the much talked-about Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre in Pahang a few month’s ago! Thanks to David, our elder son who kindly volunteered to drive and accompany us, knowing that his parents have never been there before. The casual drive from Kuala Lumpur took a little over 2 hours and we [...]
Sungkai Wildlife Conservation Centre, Perak
My beloved John and I took the opportunity to visit the Wildlife Conservation Centre in Sungkai when vacationing nearby at Felda Residence Hot Springs last December. We almost couldn’t locate the place as the receptionist at Felda Residence Hot Springs sent us on a merry-go-round when she directed us to the Convention Centre of Felda [...]

Our butterfly garden in October 2009
Hmm…just day-dreaming and imagining how marvelous if we do really have a butterfly garden! It’ll be paradise with all these wondrous insects, flying in droves to our tiny garden plot! Anyway, we are contented and happy that some butterfly species do visit us regularly to keep us enchanted with nature.
Rats storming our garden, February 2009
Very stressful month in our tropical garden, this February! Not that our plants aren’t doing fine. It is just that we are fighting a losing battle with the disgusting rats that visit our garden. Previous years, their unwelcome entries were infrequent but got worser since the last year and is becoming even more rampant of [...]
Daphnis nerii, a strikingly beautiful hawk-moth
Daphnis nerii (Oleander Hawk-moth) Simply spectacular! To be able to see such a captivating hawk-moth in person is just too marvelous for words. And, to see its transformation from a shriveled leaf into such a strikingly beautiful moth within less than a minute is another wonderful experience altogether. Like magic actually! Reminds me of The [...]
Memorable June 2008 event in our garden
Everything seem so marvelously perfect in our tropical garden setting in June. Foliage plants were at their luxuriant best, flowering plants/shrubs were happily blooming non-stop, mealy bugs/white flies were least seen, and even the weather was extra kind, neither too hot nor too wet.
White-browed Bulbuls nesting on our Lady Palm Tree!
The month of May 2008 was very significant for us! We have VIP visiting our home garden since the third week of May. A pair of White-browed Bulbul (Pycnonotus luteolus) had finally succeeded in building their nest outside, on our potted Rhapis excelsa (Lady Palm), at our front yard! Yippee, the breeding season/cycle has begun!
Graphium agamemnon, a green-spotted swallowtail butterfly
Graphium agamemnon (Tailed Jay, Green Spotted Triangle) – Whoa! I’m enraptured! Found this magnificent beauty in our garden a few days ago! A large tropical butterfly with a wingspan of 7-8 cm. What a spectacular looking butterfly! Apple green spots and bands of variable sizes beautifully contrast against its predominantly black upperside and fashioned in [...]
Eurema andersonii, a restless yellow butterfly
Eurema andersonii andersonii (One-spot Grass Yellow) – Humph…such a restless flier! This lovely yellow butterfly rarely stops to enable me to capture its image. Very often, the moment I glimpsed it flying around the Pithecellobium dulce ‘Variegated’ (Variegated Madras Thorn) in our garden, I’ll zoom in with camera but end up disappointed many a time. [...]
