How charming - I have a red one which reproduces with ease and is usually in flower. I would happily part with stems to anyone who asks - in fact, the more I ignore it, the more it grows. I would love to get hold of a yellow one!

Hi Sue! We're as dumbfounded! About a month ago, our epidendrum bud also did the same "now you see, now you don't" trick on us, like what you're experiencing, and we don't know why?
Sorry, we have no answers for you! :(

I have about 15 very tall purple (magenta) epidendrums in large pots. Each one has about 15 large clusters of flowers. Last year, something attacked the tops where the new individual buds are before they bloom. I had to trim all the stems back. Some were 5 feet long. It was awful. Oddly, it did not happen to any of the other colors I have. This year the purples came back better than ever, but now the same thing is happening. The little tiny buds at the top are shrinking and dying. The only insects I ever see at the tops are wasps, but my husband says these are okay and eat aphids. I did find a couple of grasshopper-types on the tops last year and removed them immediately. But I haven't seen a single one this year. Why are my purple epis pooping out when they should be in full bloom? Thanks. Sue

I just got my new Epidendrum radicans today. I put it on my balcony and watered it. It has plenty of flowers.

Should I water it every week? or twice a week? It is in full sun.

Thank you,

Atala

You're most welcome, James. All the best to you, hope your effort reaps reward. Just enjoy your gardening and hope for small surprises that come unexpectedly...that way you won't be disappointed. :D

Thanks for your info.
Wow - 3 - 4 weeks, I thought you fertilise them weekly.

I came across somewhere where is said weakly weekly.. and that had caused me to kill my orchid.

But 3 - 4 weeks is like about one month once, thats a long wait for them to flower... really hope I got that much patience to wait for I had waited more than few years to see my reed orchid to bloom.

You're most welcome, James. Haha...this article took me almost 10 days of research as there were so many contradictory info online, hope ours here didn't add to the confusion, heh! ;)
Caring for our reed orchid:
1) it's watered once daily, by submerging the whole pot into a pail filled with water (to a level above the rim of the pot) until the bubbles disappear and sprinkle some water onto its foliage/stem;
2) once every 3-4 weeks, it's fed with a few pellets of composted organic fertilizer. We use goat manure which is cheap and easy. Just throw a few pellets onto the surface of pot medium.
If they flower due to our tlc, it's a bonus, otherwise we just continue to do the needful for its survival and enjoy their healthy presence and of course keep hopeful to be rewarded with blooms. :)

Hi Jacq,
Thanks for your detailed write up on the reed orchid. I would like to know:

How did you take care of it? concerning watering and feeding.

What type of fertiliser did you use - I'm worried about fertilisers as I had bad experiences when I applied them and they died (catteya and psedublub type of orchids)

But when I don't fertilise them, they don't flower.
Hope you can share your thoughts on this matter.

Thanks.
